NEWS TO MAKE YOU SMILE

Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo’s comments on World Cup stadiums brought a smile to my face.

"The stadiums are not going be white elephants. They are going to be utilised in the future," he said.
"All stadiums are multi-purpose and will be used for concerts, rugby and soccer. They can also be used for conferences. You can have your wedding there. You can have your birthday there."

So I am picturing a wedding or a birthday party with 60-90 000 guests.
I didn’t know that there were people living in South Africa that are that popular!
But, what do I know.
Maybe that was not what he meant?

The New Zealand Herald sports writer Chris Rattue, who made himself very unpopular in South Africa when he referred to Johannesburg during the Soccer World Cup as a "hell-hole", is cause for yet another smile.

I am all smiles today.

In his article, Rattue calls for coach de Villiers to be fired.
"De Villiers was a political appointment - the administration acknowledged as much about a man with no senior coaching CV.
"If South African rugby had foresight and real desperation, it would realise the game is up, the joke is over, and give de Villiers the boot, and quick," he concluded.

But further on he implies that de Villiers does not coach the Springboks at all.

‘Smit - by quiet account - actually runs the Springbok team along with veteran lineout ace Victor Matfield, with input from the assistant coaches,’ he writes.
