In Hip Hop music, a hype man is a figure
who plays a central but supporting role within a group,
making his or her own interventions, generally aimed at
hyping up the crowd.
At the time, a hype man for a club act was
unheard of in South Africa.
So I sent Siv links to performances of pioneers
such as Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and Fat Man Scoop,
and said ‘This is just to give you an idea. I want
you to hype up the crowd through visuals and movement as
opposed to simply using your voice. And most of all, I want
you to be a hip African.’
The
result was spectacular. |

During rehearsals, I was impressed with
Siv’s professionalism and work ethic.
Siv is the personification of my vision of the energetic,
focused and balanced New South African.
I did not know it at the time, but I should
have suspected.
This young man has worked with the likes of Clint Eastwood,
Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon in Invictus, and Keifer Sutherland
and Jon Voigt on 24 Redemption to name a few.
He can also be seen on the BBC television show Outcasts,
which filmed in Cape Town in 2010.

For
the past two years, Siv, who is a black man, sounds
English and is currently playing an Indian in his
latest film, has taken his one man stand-up comedy
show ‘Dekaf’ to The National Arts Festival. |
In 2010 Dekaf won the Golden Ovation Award
for the best comedy show in Grahamstown.
Do yourself a favour and catch Siv doing
a comedy slot at the Old School Party at Inside
Cocktail Lounge next to Rosmead Spar in Kenilworth
on Saturday 4 June.
Live trio Rapture, featuring sensational
young female vocalist Zann, is also on the bill and djs
Gary Poole and Quinny Cool are on the decks to warm your
bones.
