The year was 1991 and the venue was Rosies
and All that Jazz on the V&A Waterfront, where the Aquarium
is housed today.
Or, it could have been 1993 and the venue was West End outside
the Waterfront, where Hirt & Carter is housed today.
I’m not entirely sure
But it was a long time ago.
This was the first time that I had booked
Steven Jeffery Roy Newman from Cape Town, and Anthony Jeffrey
Cox from Redcliff in Zimbabwe.
But the two had been playing togther for
the best part of ten years and were already well-known,
hence the big turnout.
From the first note, it was evident that this duo was something
special.
Something unique.

And
these two handsome young white boys had long black
and brown hair respectively, and both wore their hair
in a in a ponytail. |
It was evident that they were warriors.
Warriors intent on spreading love and peace through their
guitars.
And their music spoke of beauty and joy.
Now, after careers spanning the best part
of thirty years, where the two spread their wings all over
the universe - as solo artists or working with various artists
- The Road Warriors are back to treat Cape Town to a feast
of acoustic guitar magic.
The
long ponytails are now snow white and their individual
genes have asserted itself creatively in their respective
bodies, but if anything, the guitar playing has evolved
to dizzying heights |
