Zuma told the President's Co-ordinating
Council that an investment in human settlements would be
an investment in the future.
Habitable and decent homes would promote human dignity and
stability in communities, he said.
He said apartheid laws had made black people foreigners
in urban areas, and had forced them to settle in designated
locations and temporary residences.
Well, let me remind Jacob and Tokyo.
The liberation struggle was all about restoring dignity
and not forcing people to live in designated areas with
no service delivery like running water and electricity.
It was about creating equal opportunities.
The millions of oppressed people were not
asking for wealth. They were not demanding mansions, fancy
cars and executive high-paying jobs. They were not sking
for Armani suits, Breitling watches and Johnnie Walker Blue
No Jacob and Zuma.
The people were simply asking for the opportunity to get
a decent job so that they could get their own decent homes
with decent basic services.
And you know what?
The millions of people living in the 2700 informal settlements
have been living there since before the struggle.
Many of them were born there and many of them died there.
Many of them will still be born there die there.
But at least now I understand why you’re
not delivering. You have forgotten what the people fought
for.
