CAT, ZEBRA OR CROCODILE SAUSAGE ANYONE?

On Friday, the Hawks arrested 16 people who robbed Shoprite Checkers stores of goods worth millions of rands.

The syndicate involves Checkers employees, truck drivers, private wholesalers and security guards, and operated between Pretoria, Garankuwa and Brits.

Shoprite transports tons of goods to its outlets every morning, but this syndicate would deliver some, or none of the goods.

Shop employees who were part of the syndicate would sign the goods as having been delivered, and the goods were then sold to private wholesalers.

Most of the goods were being delivered from Nampak to Shoprite outlets, but some had been destined for government institutions such as the University of Limpopo's Medunsa campus.

In sunny South Africa, this sort of news hardly raises an eyebrow.
Not that we condone this sort of crime, but it happens all the time.

What does raise my eyebrow is that when the Hawks raided wholesalers in Brits, Garankuwa and Bronkhorstspruit, they found the carcasses of a cat, zebra, buck and a crocodile in a cold storage unit, which were obviously intended to be sold as meat to unsuspecting local residents.

In future, I would think again before buying meat in those areas.

But this South Africa.

What if the 16 arrested is the tip of an iceberg and this is a national syndicate operating all over South Africa. What if this practice of selling cat and zebra meat is widespread?

Mince? Sausage? Polony? Goulash? Anyone?
