FAITHLESS: IS REAL CONCERTS FOR REAL

More than a decade ago, I managed the Cape Town venue for performances by Right Said Fred, who were very popular at the time.
They were by no means A-list artists, so the promoter wisely chose a venue with a capacity of 2000pax.

The group was scheduled to perform on three consecutive nights from Thursday to Saturday, and the public promptly snapped up all available tickets.

A few days before the concert, the group informed the promoter that they were unable to get to SA in time for the Thursday performance.
The promoter then made a huge mistake by announcing that people who had bought tickets for that night could use them for either the Friday or Saturday.

The result was chaos.
The venue was so overcrowded that moisture from the heat of bodies dripped off the walls and into the power sockets, resulting in several power failures during the performance.
Some people queued for hours, and when they eventually reached the entrance, they could barely take one step past the doorman before being met by an impenetrable wall of bodies.
Bar service was impossible and people were fuming.

This kind of greed by promoters does the industry more harm than good. If any sort of emergency had reared its head at this event lives would have been lost.
This week, the media and social networking sites are ablaze with complaints about the Faithless concert at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg.

The promoter had sold 3000 more tickets than the venue could accommodate, resulting in the same sort of problems with traffic, parking, queuing, overcrowding, overheating, bar service etc.

The promoter?
Real Concerts.
The very same promoter of the Right Said Fred concert at The Arena in Cape Town more than a decade ago.

Come on Roddy.
You have been in this game for over 20 years now.

BIZARRE RABBIT CRUSH FETISH: People are weird. I know that. But just how weird they are never ceases to amaze me. Disgust me.
I’m almost too disgusted to post this on my site.

Well, there is no reasonable point, except maybe to further nurture and spread a healthy disgust for how sick human beings are capable of being.

RECIPE FOR SEAFOOD PAELLA: Before we rush into the kitchen to cook, let’s clear up the pronunciation thing.
It is pronounced pah-el-ya, but the first L is pronounced in a rather complicated way where the tongue does not actually touch the pallet. So it sounds closer to pah-eh-ya.
Got it?
Let’s cook!

CANDICE BOUCHER IN PLAYBOY: South African model Candice Boucher, the new ‘face’ of Guess Jeans, has created quite stir when she was featured on the cover of Playboy this month with an ‘Undressed in Africa’ nude pictorial inside.
Playboy magazine no doubt appreciates the increased sales.

CONFUSE THEIR TONGUES AND RULE: I often bitch about the fact that we have eleven official languages in SA, claiming that it a sure-fire way to ensure that we never understand each other and a powerful deterrent to racial harmony and a united nation.
I had no idea that Nelson Mandela and the ANC were simply following a divine strategy to remain in power well into the future.
