I find the game of soccer
extremely boring, and very seldom watch it.
Although I admit that I find
the soccer fans at the big games quite entertaining.
Further down the page
though, at the end of the Beckenhauser article, I came across
this comment posted by Sport24 reader Kevin.
Unlike me, Kevin talks of solutions to the
problem, and in the process, he raises some interesting/amusing
points.
Yes soccer, sadly, is boring. So you
dispute this do you? Well consider that in the final, in
120 minutes of play, including extra time, just ONE goal
was scored !!! What does that say about soccer? Many of
the earlier SWC games were goalless, while scores like 1-nil,
1-all or 2-1 are typical, unlike rugby where there are multiple
scores and therefore multiple emotional release for spectators.
So how does one fix soccer? What about bigger goal areas?
Who decided on the existing width and height of the goals
and how many decades ago was that? Wouldn't it be better
if a typical match produced 7 or 8 goals by making the goal
bigger and promoting goal scoring? The game needs serious
renewal and not FIFA's "verkrampte and verstokte"
approach. Not only more goals scored but an embracing of
modern TV technology. And for goodness sake stop the players
lying on top of each other hugging and kissing when a goal
is scored, just like 12 year old spoilt and giggle schoolgirls.
I was sorely tempted to tweak Kevin's comment
a bit, but lets leave it at that for now. I have a tendency
to be over the top. Like adding more goal posts and balls
etc.
