THE R7.2-MILLION SPEEDING FINE

The Swiss are renowned for their exquisite timepieces, hiding the fortunes of the world’s super-rich, and their neutrality in times of conflict.

But don’t let them clock you speeding on their roads.
If you are caught speeding in Switzerland, the Swiss have no time for neutrality, or hiding your riches for that matter.

In Switzerland, motorists caught on the wrong side of the law are fined in relation to their earnings and wealth.

Thus, when a 37-year-old Swedish national was caught driving his Gull-winged Mercedes Benz SLS AMG at 290kmh in a 120kmh zone, he was shown no mercy.

Police promptly impounded his car and slapped him with a $1-million (R7.2-million) fine.

The car will stay in the pound until the fine is paid.

No problem you say?
After all anyone driving a car like this should be able to afford a seeding fine.

Well, in this case the fine is three times what the car is worth.

Maybe the Swede is better off leaving the car and going home to buy another one.

Swiss authorities have admitted the 37-year-old SLS AMG owner is set to become the first non-Swiss national to be prosecuted under the income-based traffic fine system.
