AND WHEN I DIE

Back in the day, I had the honour of playing saxophone alongside the very best of Cape Town’s saxophonists - in their time.

Basil ‘Manenberg’ Coetzee, Winston ‘Mankunku’ Ngozi, Robbie Jansen and Ezra Ngcukana.
Each one a giant in his own right.

Basil passed on some years ago, but 2010 has been a devastating one for that generation of Cape Town sax players.

A few months ago, Mankunku passed on.
Then three weeks ago Robbie was laid to rest, and just yesterday I got the news that Ezra too had passed away.

Some say that I have a very cold-blooded approach to death, but that’s because I accept it as a natural part of life.

To my critics, I present Blood Sweat and Tears in 1969. (condensed)

I'm not scared of dying,
And I don't really care.
If it's peace you find in dying,
Well then, let the time be near

Now troubles are many, they're as deep as a well.
I can swear there ain't no heaven but I pray there ain't no hell.
But I'll never know by living, only my dying will tell.

Give me my freedom for as long as I be.
All I ask of living is to have no chains on me.
And all I ask of dying is to go naturally.

Don't want to go by the devil.
Don't want to go by demon.
Don't want to go by Satan,
Don't want to die uneasy.
Just let me go naturally.

and when I die,
When I'm dead, dead and gone,
There'll be one child born in our world to carry on

The giants are dead.
Long live the giants.

Rest in peace Basil, Winston, Robbie and Ezra. Three tenors and an alto sax player
Long live Buddy Wells, Moreira Chonguica, Ivan Mazuze and Mark Fransman.
Three tenors and an alto sax player.
