ZENOLIA IN LOS TEQUES

I read with ambivalence the reports about the mental state of Zenolia Du Plooy, the South African woman who was sentenced to eight years in a South American prison last year.

Du Plooy was found in possession of 799g of cocaine at an airport in Venezuela and is serving her time at the notorious Los Teques prison.

Zenolia suffers from systemic lupus, an incurable disease that can be managed with medication, but because of practical problems providing her with the medication from South Africa, her condition is said to be worsening.

The reports on her condition all come from her friends in prison.
‘She thinks she’s at home, goes to work every day and has her 17-year-old son with her,’ said one of these friends, who chose to remain anonymous.

"She's a beautiful woman.’ adds another anonymous friend.
‘But she's not doing well in here. Zenolia needs money for clothing, cleaning products and other everyday use items. Her condition is deteriorating by the day.’

And to emphasise her plight, they say that she was severely assaulted in prison about three weeks ago, and everything she had with her was stolen. This included medicine and money.

When I did an article on Zenolia about a year ago, just after she was sentenced, the reports said exactly the same thing. ‘She was severely assaulted about three weeks ago.’

I do not for a second doubt the sincerity of Monica Botha of Pretoria, who started a Facebook group in support of Du Plooy when she was arrested.
The group sends her money and medication on a regular basis.

All prisons are filled with criminals. Unscrupulous criminals, that prey on the weak.

Any unconnected prisoner, and especially a foreigner, is a prime target for these gangsters.
For them, a foreign prisoner with no friends in the country, but who has a support group that regularly sends her money, is the proverbial duck that lays the golden egg.

I find it very hard to believe that the money sent to Zenolia does not end up in the coffers of her anonymous friends. Anonymous friend number two said. 'She needs money for clothing, cleaning products and other everyday use items.' There is no talk of her needing medication.
