SURVIVOR: NEW SOUTH
AFRICA
No one can deny that the SABC is
a very strong candidate for SURVIVOR: NEW SOUTH
AFRICA.
Imagine this.
In 1994, South Africa decided to host its very own
reality show.
The essence of the show was that
individuals, with absolutely no experience in running
a country, were put into groups and left stranded
in a brand new country. |
|
The winner would be the group who survived
the longest, and who was best able to bluff their way
through the humungous task of leading the country into
a bright new future.
The groups included Eskom, The Health
Department, the SAPS, Home Affairs, The Department of
Education, Telkom, SAA, Transnet…….
You probably remember them all.
15 years later, many of these groups are
still surviving, not least of them the SABC.
I often marvel at how they excel.
Apart from the fact that they have screened
‘Message in a Bottle’ 3321 times, it takes
pure genius to advertise the screening times of the movie
immediately after screening it.
Their scheduling of programs over three
channels is also exceptional.
It takes pure genius to schedule two different soccer
matches simultaneously on two channels, while scheduling
a ‘soccer highlights’ package on the third.
Then there is the fact that they managed
to accrue almost a billion rand in debt, but even this
has no effect on their will to survive.
I am not sure how they will fare when
it comes down to the jury though, because on that panel
sits Snuki Zikalala, The Tender Committee, Jackie Selebi
and Thabo Mbeki,
