GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT
FIGHTING CRIME
Is it a sign that Bheki Cele is
putting his money – or rather his bullets
– where his mouth is?
At around midday yesterday, guards
at Baviaansdrift prison in Kameeldrift, north of
Pretoria, noticed a black Volswagen Polo and a white
Nissan bakkie approaching a Coin Security van.

|
They notified police and a special task
force and the police’s air wing were dispatched.
As the police approached, the suspects
got out of their vehicles and started shooting at the
tyres of the Coin van.
The task force opened fire,
killing six of the armed robbers. Three others managed
to escape.
A police superintendent was shot in both
legs. He was airlifted to hospital and was in a stable
condition.
So far, three R5 rifles, four pistols
and a shotgun had been recovered from the scene.
For me, this report was a welcome relief
from the usual ‘No arrests have been made’
and ‘Robbers released due to lack of evidence’
that we have grown accustomed to reading.
This is the kind of action we need from
police.
If they continue in this way, criminals will soon learn
that crime does not pay - the way it has been paying for
the past decade and a half.
