IN MEMORY
OF MANKUNKU
Many people, especially in the music
industry, know me as Kadudu.
Not many know where the name comes from.
In the early and mid-seventies,
when I was hanging out in the shebeens of Gugulethu,
when Winston Mankunku introduced me to his friends,
they found it very difficult to grasp my name.
‘Ka…Ka? Ngubani?’ they used to
say. |
|
To make things easier, Mankunku dubbed
me Kadudu.
After that we had no problem.
When he said ‘This is my friend Kadudu,’ they
said ‘Kadudu? Oh yes. I know Kadudu.’
Monwabisi Winston Mankunku Ngozi was not
a man who went around giving lessons.
He was far too humble for that, but by spending time with
him, I learnt a very important and valuable lesson.
A lesson that had a profound impact on the way I live
my life.
A lesson that, every day, I still strive to apply to my
life.
‘Your
music’ he said in not so many words,
‘like your life, will
never be beautiful if there is no love in it.’
For that, I thank you Mankunku.
Rest in peace my friend.
You have earned it.
