FASHION,
ART OR RACISM
Fashion bible Vogue has caused a
furor and the magazine is being accused of racism.
In the latest issue, Dutch supermodel
Lara Stone is featured in a spread that describes
her as "A real woman in body and in character
for whom the pleasure - like the sense - of metamorphosis
is not the least of qualities."
In the pics that are causing the
uproar, the models face and body is plastered in
dark brown make-up. |
|
The magazine is therefore being accused
of using a white model to appear to be black.
Well dark brown.
No one seems to be accusing the magazine
of trying to make her look white in some of the shots
in the feature, where her face is caked in white clay.
Or, of trying to make her appear to be a primitive avatar
in the shots where she wears a series of masks.
In fact, this is not the
first time that Lara Stone appears in Vogue, and she looks
like a completely different woman every time.
Were they trying to make her look white?
Latino? Indian?
Of course not.
This is fashion and art.
But dare to feature her with dark make-up.
That’s racist.
That’s ‘culturally insensitive.’
