THE
BUSY-BUSY POLICE SERVICE
Ok. I know that the media is hungry
and desperate for stories that will grab the public’s
attention, and this could be why this particular
one made headlines.
It is not the fact that Percy Montgomery
allegedly assaulted his wife, or even the fact that
she has now withdrawn the charges of assault that
I find amusing.
It’s the comment by the police
regarding the fact that Tasmin has withdrawn the
charges. |

Springbok kicking coach Percy Montgomery
appeared in the Verulam Magistrates court last Monday,
after Tasmin laid a charge of assault against her husband.
He was released on bail of R1500.00
The incident took place at Tasmin’s
parents’ house in Umhlanga Rocks, after the couple
had dinner at the Oyster Box in Umhlanga last Sunday.
They had a heated argument and Tasmin claimed that her
husband then assaulted her.
On Friday, Tasmin withdrew the charges
and the family issued the following statement.
"We are together and very happy as a family,
no charges are being pressed, no court appearances will
be taking place and we are simply distressed that ten
minutes of flared tempers have led to headlines.
We can confirm that a charge was laid in haste and over-reaction
to a husband and wife argument the like of which most
couples probably exchange. No one was punched nor was
anyone injured although a piece of furniture was struck
in frustration.”
Now here is the amusing part.
The KwaZulu-Natal police expressed concern
on Monday about domestic violence cases that are reported
and withdrawn.
“It’s about time something was done about
crimes that are reported and withdrawn. People [should]
reimburse the state for the time and resources spent when
the charge is laid,” said Captain Vincent Mdunge.
Yes.
I can imagine the amount of time and effort that went
into this particular case.
The police are very busy with other things and we shouldn’t
waste their precious time like this. Somebody will have
to pay (money) for this.
Should I mention the other things that
they are busy with?
