THE
BLACK CAPITALIST MINORITY
If memory serves me correctly, transferring
the wealth of the country to the people as a whole,
as opposed to a selective minority, was one of the
pillars of the struggle for freedom.
This is listed in the Freedom Charter
as the National Democratic Revolution.

South Africa has since overtaken
Brazil as the most unequal society in the world, and South
Africa’s ‘Rich List’ as compiled by
Who Owns Whom, highlights the fact that a brand new black
capitalist class has been created since 1994.
Most of the blacks on this list benefited
from BEE, yet BEE is supposed to be a process to decrease
income inequalities.
No wonder then that the natives are getting
understandably restless.
The National Union of Mineworkers on Monday
called for the nationalisation of the wealth of South
Africa’s richest man, Patrice Motsepe, who (incidentally?)
made his money from mining.
Motsepe is worth a reported R14.2-billion.
‘Why should such massive wealth
be in the hands of private individuals?’ asked Numsa
spokesperson Castro Ngobese. (Note the first name and
be afraid Patrice. But then again, I suppose you can afford
to not be afraid.)
‘We strongly believe that our National
Democratic Revolution (NDR) as encapsulated in the Freedom
Charter was never meant to reproduce or replace a White
capitalist class with a Black capitalist class or co-opt
connected politicians to join exploiters.’
Also on Numsa’s list are the Macozomas,
Nhlekos, Mittals, and of course Tokyo Sexwale. Donald
Sexwale? Tokyo Trump?
Btw, can Tokyo Sexwale still
be referred to as ‘A hero of the freedom struggle’
when the struggle so obviously still continues?
Not the for him though.
For Dog’s sake, the man recently
spent a night in a shack so that he could experience
firsthand ‘the plight of the poor?’
