PDV: A MAGNET FOR
CRITICISM
Abdullah Ibrahim, speaking on publicity,
once said to me ‘It does not matter if they
are talking shit about you. As long as they are
talking about you.’
Peter De Villiers should take comfort
in this.
He seems to be a magnet for criticism.
Not the positive ‘constructive criticism’
kind either.
Pure unadulterated negative feedback. |

Many are of the opinion
that this criticism has its roots in racism.
Others say that he is enjoying the legacy that was created
by Jake White.
Still others claim that it is simply the man’s persona
– coupled with his voice – if I may so add
– that evokes the wrath of his critics.
It is human nature for the fans to blame
the coach, or even the captain, if a team loses.
In PDV’s case however, it seems
to be a case of ‘If they lose, he is to blame. If
they win, someone else is responsible.’
The job of an international side’s
coach is to manage the team.
The team includes all the other coaches, like the back
line coach and the forward coach and what ever other specialist
coaches they have in rugby today.
Peter de Villiers is an unglamorous coloured
man with a very annoying voice and a suspect intellect.
But give the man a break.
His job is to ensure that the rugby team wins matches.
They are doing that.
